'Law must be followed' if making those on maternity leave redundant

If employers are forced to make employees on maternity leave redundant, they must ensure they are adhering to employment law, according to one business.
Law Firm Mace and Jones has admitted that in the current economic downturn, many employers may have no choice when it comes to who they make redundant.
However, although it may be inevitable, managing the redundancy process correctly is essential or bosses may find themselves faced with compensation pay-outs and lost management hours.
Victoria Othen, employment law associate at Mace and Jones, said: "The danger for bosses is that it is automatically unfair to dismiss or to select an employee for redundancy for a reason related to pregnancy or maternity."
However, she noted that there is not law which precludes making an employee on maternity leave redundant. Earlier this month, Prima Baby warned mothers that it can sometimes be difficult to get the work-baby balance right.
