I can take it or leave it
Even if it smacks you between the eyes? Well, there are jobs and there are jobs. And nine-to-five is all in the mind. So if you're feeling like that about your situation at the moment, it could be time to move on.
Scary? Over-doing it in your comfort zone could be scarier. Because there's no such thing as a job for life any more and deep-down every boss expects to see his staff wanting to advance.
So how about it? This is the best place in the world to look for options. Register yourself here and you have more choice than anywhere else. Plus you can shop-window yourself and still be completely anonymous - employers and recruiters can size you up without actually knowing who you are or where you work.
Which means you can literally "take it or leave it". Could anything be simpler - or more rewarding?
How to get a job fast
It happens to the best of us. A buyout, a merger, a overnight hike in the price of oil - and suddenly your "secure" job is whipped away. Never easy at the best of times, especially in mid-career when the years start ganging up against you.
Yes, it's a shock. The unexpected always is. Don't let it get you down, it's time to reinvent yourself - maybe even an opportunity. Because when did you last take a serious look at where your career is going and how much you have achieved?
Take a look at yourself as an investment. That's what you are when people hire you. Employers want your strengths - your experience, your contacts and your familiarity with the job category. Write them down. You may not wind up doing exactly the same thing, but you're a professional and know what you're doing - and that counts plenty in your favour.
That's not all you know, either. You're probably familiar with the main companies in your sector, where they're located and what they're like. With a bit of research, you'll also know exactly what they're looking for - and with a world wide talent shortage, most companies are ALWAYS looking.
You'll know the going pay rate for your area too. And what to expect when you go looking. Don't ask for the moon of course, you won't get it. Just think of how you stack up right now and how a company might look at you.
If the odds don't work, be prepared to change. After all, if things aren't happening for you, why hang on to the way they are? Change the rules! For instance, how wedded are you to your location, your salary expectations, or even the job sector you're in?
Move somewhere else and the game changes. So do pay packets.
Still not right? Ever thought of switching careers? New faces, new interests, new stimulation. With a bit of ingenuity, you might even persuade a company to pay for your training in a new skill - particularly if you can combine it with, or build on existing experience.
